King Matjaž's Castles

Have you ever heard of the legend of King Matjaž? King Matjaž is still sleeping under Mount Peca. In his honour, at the flatlands of Mitnek under Peca, above Črna na Koroškem, people have been building snow castles for more than 25 years. On the last weekend in January, enthusiasts from near and far gather in Podpeca and compete in building snow castles.

The central part of the event is the team competition in building snow castles from morning to sunset, when the party begins, while the next day programme is intended for children and families. In the following days after the event, there is much interest in viewing the castles, and how long the snow sculptures remain depends on the weather conditions.
