Winter Experiences
A magical landscape draped in a white blanket awaits adventure lovers on the snow. Numerous ski resorts and nature offer unlimited possibilities for outdoor adventure enthusiasts.
Koroška in White
Beautiful in all seasons, magical in white. Koroška with well-maintained ski resorts, snow-covered hills and valleys heralds an active winter and invites you into nature. Ski resorts on the slopes of Pohorje, Peca and also in the valleys offer great enjoyment for experienced skiers and beginners, families and all who prefer to spend winter actively.
If you prefer cross-country skiing, you can also find a suitable trail for yourself. Unique views and that indispensable excitement will also be experienced by ski touring enthusiasts. Winter experiences in Koroška are anything but winter hibernation.
Ski Resorts
At Kope, visitors are greeted by varied ski slopes, modern infrastructure, new chairlifts and a diverse winter offering for different generations of skiers. The ski center is also known for the longest night skiing in Slovenia, so winter experiences there last long after sunset. Ribniško Pohorje also offers pleasant skiing in a natural environment, while popular smaller ski resorts include Poseka at Ravne na Koroškem, Kotlje ski resort and Bukovnik, which are especially suitable for relaxed recreation, learning to ski and first ski turns. The winter atmosphere is complemented by the Črna na Koroškem ski resort, which with its snow-covered landscape and homely character offers pleasant winter experiences for visitors of all generations.
Ski Touring
Climbing with skis to distant peaks is rewarded with unforgettable descents. While gliding down quiet slopes, you will trigger adrenaline despite the tranquility. With favorable weather conditions and sufficient snow, Koroška offers you excellent experiential wanderings across the Pohorje plateaus between Kope and Ribniško Pohorje, as well as more demanding tours and descents on the slopes of Peca, Raduha and Olševa. Peca in particular is interesting for ski tourers, especially for those who prefer descending to climbing, as from the Austrian side a cable car transport is available right below the mountain peak, to an elevation of 1,950 m.
King Matjaž's Castles
Do you know the legend of King Matjaž? King Matjaž under Peca has still not awakened. In his honor, snow castles have been built at Matevžavi travniki in Črna na Koroškem for more than a quarter of a century. On the last weekend in January, enthusiasts from near and far gather in Podpeca and compete in building snow castles. The central part of the event is the team competition in building snow castles from morning until sunset, followed by entertainment. The program the next day is intended for children and families. Even in the days after the event, there is considerable interest in viewing the built castles; how long the snow sculptures remain preserved depends on weather conditions. Join the numerous teams and build your own ice castle!
Winter Hiking
You can set out on shorter walks or full-day winter hikes across scenic peaks and valleys practically throughout all of Koroška. With a sufficient white blanket, exchange your shoes for snowshoes and embark on wanderings across the Pohorje plateaus, and for more demanding tours tackle the two-thousand-meter peaks Peca, Raduha or Olševa. For the latter, it is recommended to hire guidance from local mountain guides.
