About Slovenj Gradec

Slovenj Gradec, the oldest town in Koroška, is the cultural heart of the Mislinja Valley, where history intertwines with a modern pulse. It was granted town rights as early as 1267, and its location between Mount Uršlja Gora and the Pohorje Hills offers visitors an excellent starting point for exploring nature, hiking and cycling trails, and themed experiences. A visit to the town is also an opportunity to experience authentic Koroška tradition. In the Perger House, where honey-bread, mead, and candle products have been crafted since 1757, visitors can discover a rich heritage of craftsmanship, while the scent of honey accompanies them on a stroll through the picturesque town center. Slovenj Gradec is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, art, and museums. The Koroška Regional Museum, the Hugo Wolf Museum, and the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts reveal the town's historical, musical, and artistic stories. Due to its cultural and peace-oriented role, Slovenj Gradec was awarded the honorary title of Messenger of Peace by the United Nations in 1989. The town also offers boutique accommodations, bicycle rentals, and numerous interesting excursion points in the surrounding area. Notable among these are sacred landmarks such as the Church of St. Pancras above Stari Trg, the Church of St. George with its glass floor, and other churches connected in a mysterious mythological triangle. In summer, Slovenj Gradec comes alive with music, film, and events. The Rotenturn castle courtyard hosts film evenings under the stars, the Zebra Festival delights younger visitors, and the Medieval Prelude fills the town streets with music, artisans, knights, and a medieval atmosphere. Slovenj Gradec invites you to discover culture, nature, tradition, and art—in a town where every street has its own story.
