What to do in Koroška when it rains
Koroška is at its most beautiful when explored in various ways. Sometimes, sunny days beckon us to mountain trails, scenic viewpoints, and nature experiences. Other times, raindrops open doors to the underground world, museums, swimming pools, and stories we might otherwise miss in fine weather. One of the most unique experiences in Koroška lies deep beneath the surface – in the Underground of Peca in Mežica. A rainy day is an excellent opportunity to visit the former mine, where you can ride a mining train into the heart of Peca and discover the mysterious world of tunnels, intertwining the stories of miners, tradition, and over 300 years of lead and zinc mining history. A special experience is also an insight into the world of minerals – in the collection of ores, minerals, and fossils, visitors can learn about the richness hidden in the depths of the Koroška mountains. Among the minerals, wulfenite stands out as one of the most beautiful and recognizable minerals of this area.

When the weather isn’t inviting for longer excursions, it can be the perfect time for relaxation and a water retreat. The Ravne na Koroškem Swimming Pool and Aqualatio Slovenj Gradec offer opportunities for swimming, recreation, and relaxation regardless of weather conditions. In addition to the pools, visitors are also pampered with well-maintained saunas, where you can enjoy a moment of peace, relaxation, and regeneration after an active day. A rainy day can conclude with a visit to one of Koroška’s cultural attractions or pleasant spots for relaxation. An evening stroll through Slovenj Gradec, a short walk with an umbrella through its historic town center, or a visit to the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts offers a different perspective on the town when the streets quiet down and gain a special atmosphere. Culture enthusiasts can also visit the Birthplace of Hugo Wolf, where they can learn about the life of one of the most important composers of late Romanticism through stories and music.

Fans of folk-pop music can also use a rainy day to visit the museum collection of the Štirje kovači ensemble in Slovenj Gradec. The collection Where Has the Time Gone … takes visitors through more than seven decades of the musical journey of one of Slovenia’s oldest folk-pop ensembles. During the visit, you can learn the stories of the band members, view photographs, sheet music, awards, instruments, and many other items that testify to their work and their influence on Slovenia’s musical heritage. Many stories from the past are also preserved by the Koroška Regional Museum in Slovenj Gradec. Among the most valuable is the Soklič Collection, created by Jakob Soklič—a priest, cultural worker, and passionate collector. On display are archaeological finds, artworks, ethnological objects, a numismatic collection, items from different parts of the world, an African collection, a Hugo Wolf corner, and the rich library of Franc Ksaver Meško with more than 6,000 books.
A rainy evening can also be an opportunity for culinary exploration—visiting a local inn, tasting traditional Koroška dishes, or enjoying relaxed company over good food, where the best travel stories often begin.
