OLD IRONWORKS
The Old Ironworks in Ravne na Koroškem is one of the most important sites of technical and industrial heritage in Koroška. The oldest preserved buildings of the former Ravne Ironworks were declared a cultural monument of local significance in 1994 due to their uniqueness and recognition. They reveal to visitors the story of a place profoundly marked by ironworking—not only as an economic activity, but as a way of life for numerous generations.
The ironworking museum features numerous historical machines, devices, and tools that testify to the technical knowledge, work, and development of the ironworking tradition. Among the most interesting exhibits are the repač, puddling furnace, rolling mills, crane, locomotive, various hammers, and electric arc furnace. These objects bring visitors closer to the demanding nature of work in the ironworks, while also showcasing the exceptional technical heritage of the Ravne area.
A special part of the experience is the forge, where hearths, tongs, anvils, bellows, and other blacksmithing tools are preserved. During demonstrations by the museum blacksmith, visitors can learn about traditional blacksmithing techniques, and during workshops, they can try their hand at wielding the blacksmith's hammer themselves. The Old Ironworks is thus not merely a museum collection, but a living space of memory, knowledge, and steel heritage that continues to connect Ravne na Koroškem with its identity as a town of ironworkers.
