Koroška's Deepest Water Adventure

You can explore the underground labyrinth of tunnels and excavations nearly 700 meters below the surface by kayak! This experience is among Slovenia's recognized unique experiences and is one of the most picturesque examples of how former industrial heritage can come alive in a modern tourism story.

Paddling Through Mining Secrets

From the mining museum at Glančnik in Mežica, you will travel by mining train through the 3.5-kilometer-long Glančnik tunnel to the Union shaft. From there, you will descend stairs just under 100 meters to the water level. Equipped with protective gear, you will enter the water-filled tunnel and step into kayaks. Together with your guide, you will set off along a small underground river to the lakes, where the magical journey begins. Paddling through calm, clear water, you will explore the underground labyrinth of tunnels and excavations. You will also learn what it was like in the days when the mine was not silent, but filled with the hum of machines and the striking of tools. During the experience, you will also sample Koroška cuisine - homemade platters of local delicacies from surrounding farms!  

The tour concludes with a delicious miner's snack.

How Did Water Enter the Mine?

In 1994, ore extraction ceased at the Mežica mine. Since water pumping stopped at the same time, it flooded the lower sections up to the water tunnel, through which it now flows freely out of the mine. The water also flooded the large excavations made by miners, which today look like magical underground lakes.
