Ravne Manor 

Ravne Castle, located on a terrace above the town centre, was built by the Hebenstreit family, patriarchal vassals who moved to Koroška around 1530, and it likely once belonged to a manor farm that stood here even before the castle was built in the 1530s. in the 16th century. The castle, which its first owners named Streiteben, has undergone numerous stylistically inconsistent reconstructions from the late Gothic period to the present day; its current Neo-Baroque appearance was given by the Counts of Thurn, who remodelled it after 1863 and laid out the castle park.

During the renovation of the Koroška Central Library of Dr Franc Sušnik, whose founders allocated premises in Ravne Castle (also the first home of Ravne Grammar School), archaeological investigations in 2002 uncovered architectural remains of a basement space of a masonry structure with a preserved staircase. Among the finds are interesting fragments of ceramic vessels, numerous bones of birds and small animals, individual iron objects, ceramic stove tiles, and an intriguing ceramic trough. In the chapel of Ravne Castle, a permanent exhibition is also on display – a lapidarium of Roman stone monuments from the Zagrad site near Prevalje and individual stones from the Municipality of Ravne na Koroškem. The castle premises also house paintings created through art colonies held in the gallery of the Likovni salon since 1969, as well as a rich collection of small-scale sculpture. In the castle premises, which today house the Koroška Central Library of Dr Franc Sušnik, and in the park in front of the castle, numerous cultural and other events take place. A walk beneath and among the crowns of mighty trees quietly reveals stories of years gone by to every visitor – from the times when counts strolled here to the times when, and still today, young couples from the grammar school have hidden here ...
