A tour of the mine by mining train is one of the most authentic experiences in the Peca Underground, where visitors enter the world of the Mežica Valley’s more than 350-year mining tradition in a unique way. The experience begins at Glančnik in Mežica, where visitors receive helmets and protective clothing, and then ride an original mining train into the heart of Peca—along the route miners once took to work every day.
The train ride takes visitors deep below the surface, to the Moring district, about 600 metres beneath the Veliki Vrh hill. There, a guided tour of the underground tunnels begins, during which the guide presents the miners’ life and work, ore extraction methods, mining tools, and the stories of the people who for decades helped shape the industrial character of the Mežica Valley. The dark tunnels, the sounds of the mine, and the preserved mining equipment create the feeling that time beneath the mountain has, for a moment, stood still.
